How the Bonno Housing Programme could open up the market
The Bonno Housing Programme gives private investors an opportunity to participate in housing development, creating room for aspiring Botswana developers to enter the market.
One of the biggest barriers to property development is the cost of acquiring land. A single piece of development land can cost tens of millions of pula, and a small developer must then also finance land servicing before construction can begin.
The programme has the potential to lower those barriers by creating opportunities for private developers, instead of leaving large-scale housing development to one entity, the Botswana Housing Corporation. More competition means more innovation, better quality and more housing options for Batswana, and it encourages citizen participation in an industry that has been difficult to enter.
The conversation should not stop with housing. Services such as water and electricity could also be opened to greater private sector participation, with appropriate regulation.
Could greater private sector participation transform Botswana’s property market, or are there risks that need to be addressed?
Your home ownership dream could start now.
